The Church of Panagia tou Arakos
The book, on what many consider as the most important church of the Byzantine period in Cyprus, has been in the making for nine years.
It is organized in three sections. The first one, in black and white, contains texts by experts in their respective fields, a second one in color contains the photographic documentation of the church and an appendix, again in b&w, with the drawings of the dome and the inside elevations of the church accompanied by a catalogue of all the wall paintings and their location.
Whereas, the first section, takes an analytical approach in discussing different aspects of the church and its wall-paintings, the photographic section through its organization and lay-out tries to convey the experience of visiting church. In some instances the photos zoom in at near 1:1 scale, revealing the brushstrokes and subtle details of the paintings, sometimes impossible to physically approach because of the their location, high on the walls or inside the altar. In others they frame a particular scene drawing attention to the composition as a whole.
Published in Εnglish and in Greek by the Leventis Foundation and the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation. The book is cloth-bound with a dust jacket.
