The last monk of the Strofades: Memories from an unknown Greek island
Second edition of the book The Last monk of the Strofades: Memories from an unknown Greek Island, on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at the Benaki Museum. The book is based on a photographic documentation by Robert McCabe of the one-of-a-kind castle-monastery shortly before the 2018 earthquake, which resulted in extensive damage to the already distressed building. The photos are accompanied by accounts from the last monk who lived there until shortly before his death in 2017, the boatman who took him supplies and the island’s last lighthouse keeper. The book also includes an architectural documentation of the building by Stavros Mamaloukos, as well as short texts by experts on the history, geology and natural environment of the Strophades. The publication has been edited by the journalist Katerina Lymberopoulou.
